ABOUT THE ARTIST

”Even the blind can “see” this quilt!” -A statement heard at the art gallery opening. My name is Jessie my art is comfort. Handmade quilts are unique in that they bring a warmth and emotional charge to those they touch. The goal of my art is to wrap the viewer with bold texture. Most of my pieces are celebrating the stitch -my true heroine, the quilting is paramount to the design often using thick yarn to achieve the esthetic. I am a full-time textile artist and a longtime lover of all fiber and textiles. I create original inspirational art using repurposed, sustainably found fiber as well as naturally dyed textiles in each new creation. Starting seeds indoors each winter and planting in spring yields a harvest in summer and fall for my natural textile dyes, indigo, marigolds, barks and oak galls. Often the materials I use are unique to typical quilting such as velvets, upholstery from furniture makers and garment fabrics quilted by hand using thick yarn to achieve a stand-alone texture-heavy bold art piece.

All of my art quilts are designed by me and are not patterns. Each piece is one-of-a-kind art. My art quilts start with an idea and the dying of my fabrics and gathering of textiles and fibers to compose. Often the design is determined by the materials gathered. My signature is hand stitched on the front as well as signed on the back with the composition name and date in permanent fabric marking pen. Unless otherwise indicated most pieces include sleeves or pockets and or a wooden dowel rod for easy hanging on the back. The last stage of making is to photograph the art hung in the studio in bright natural sunlight usually in the morning hours, the piece is listed in the modartquilt shop or sent to exhibition. If the piece desired is currently on exhibition the collector will be notified immediately the end date of the exhibit and ship date.

Proud member of SAQA Studio Art Quilt Associates, American Craft Council, Arts in Bartlett and the Modern Quilt Guild, my art has been acquired by International private collections and has exhibited at many shows including QUILTCON, International Quilt Festival and has appeared in art galleries and publications including Curated Quilts and Patchwork Professional magazine.
